Double Z Hot Rods
Located in the small California town of Dinuba is a hot rod shop that has been under the radar for a number of years. Double Z Hot Rods is a shop that is very capable of producing groundbreaking cars from start to finish. Greg Zulim and son Russell Zulim started the shop in 2006 and have been creating wonderful cars since. Greg stated: “We can do the same wonderful fabrication, paint, design, and attention to detail that the big names can, the difference is we have little to no overhead which makes building a hot rod much more economical.” The 8,000 sq ft facilities are converted packing sheds that the Zulim family previously farmed out of for decades.
The shops are comprised of a full body and paint facility, machine room, lift, multiple sheet metal rooms, and frame tables. Greg, Russell, and valuable partner and builder Jimmy Teague have created over 30 complete cars. It all began with Greg’s 1931 model A that he has had since the age of 14. Greg did everything imaginable to his Model A, chopped it, and leaned the a-pillars back and b-pillars forward to get the look of a deuce. There are over 100 other body mods that Greg did with a seamless beautiful outcome. To top it off, Greg shoehorned a blown Buick nailhead under the hood.
The only indoor show that the Zulim family entered was the 07 Grand National Roadster Show where Greg and his Model A won 1st in its class. Since then customers have been bringing a wide variety of cars for Double Z Hot Rods to customize and build. The work done at Double Z Hot Rods reflects their passion for hot rodding and the constant struggle for perfection.
An impressive, unique aspect of the shop is that Greg, Russell, and Jimmy do not have designated specialties or jobs. On any given day anyone of them may be in the paint booth creating wonderful paintjobs, shaping new body panels, doing engine work, fabricating frames, wiring a car, or doing anything that comes up. Greg stated: “We each have similar skill sets, and they include just about anything, we enjoy having a hand in every stage of a build.”
Plans for the future include another shop building on the grounds, a new line of parts for hot rods which will include double z signature model a and deuce headlight bars, windshields for roadsters, and a line of custom air cleaners. Greg, Russell, and Jimmy plan on setting up booths at many car shows in the future and finally attending some of the popular show circuits with their creations.
